J Jayalalitha was the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu for six times. She is an actress turned politician. She entered the cine industry as a child in 1961 for the Kannada film named ‘Sri Shaila Mahathme’. She won a lot of awards for her acting skills. Followed by that, she joined All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) founded by MGR.
J Jayalalitha was born on February 24, 1948, at Pandavapura taluk, Mandya district which is in Karnataka. Her parents were Jayaram and Vedavalli. She belonged to the Tamil Brahmin Iyengar family. And her mother is also a movie actress. Rangasamy Iyengar her maternal grandfather had moved to Mysore from Srirangam to work in Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. He had a son and three daughters. Her daughter Vedavalli got married to Jeyaram. And the couple had a daughter and a son. The daughter named Jayalalitha and widely called by the name Ammu by family.
J Jayalalitha never had a smooth childhood. His father never worked and squandered most of the family money. He died when she was only two years. So her mother moved back to her house in Bangalore. She learned typewriting to get a government job. At that time her sister began to work in the cine industry in Tamilnadu. So with her help, Vedavalli too began acting. All the time J Jayalalitha stayed with his grandparents. She shared in an interview that she missed her mother a lot in her childhood.
While being with her grandparents, she attended Bishop Cotton Girls’ School, Bangalore. Once her aunt got married she moved to Chennai to live with her mother. She did complete her education at Sacred Heart Matriculation School also known as Presentation Church Park Convent. She was an excellent student and got her gold medal in Tamilnadu 10th state board exam. She also got a scholarship to continue her higher studies. Then she joined Stella Maris College, Chennai. But she couldn’t continue her studies because of her mother. Due to her pressure, she joined the acting profession.
J Jayalalitha was fluent in Tamil, English, Arabic, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. She got trained in Carnatic Music and Classical Piano. Along with this, she mastered classical dances like Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Manipuri and Kathak. She got her Bharatanatyam and other dance classes from K.J.Sarasa. In her debut dance performance at the Rasika Ranjani Sabha, the chief guest was Shivaji Ganesan. He expressed his interest to see her as an actress in the future.
J Jayalalitha has acted for more than 140 films. She has acted in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi and English. She also starred in a Hindi film called Manmauji (1962) in a three minute dance sequence. Being in the school itself, she begins to act in some of the plays of Y. G. Parthasarathy. Shankar Giri the son of former Indian President very much impressed with J Jayalalitha, he got permission from her mother. And made her act in an English movie called The Epistle.
In Tamil, she played her debut role in April 1964. The movie named Undersecretary with her mother. In-between 1964 and 1966 J Jayalalitha has acted in more than 35 dramas. In 1964 her mother went through a lot of financial debts and urged her to do sign number of films. And sacrificing her dream to become the lawyer she becomes the actress. In 1967, she bought her Veda Nilayam bungalow in Poes garden for 1.67 lakhs.
J Jayalalitha entered into politics with the help of MGR into AIADMK in 1982. In 1984, she becomes a member of Rajya Sabha. In 1989, she was again elected as a member of the Tamilnadu Legislative assembly. Then in 1991, he becomes the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu at the age of 43. Then in 2001, she again becomes the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu. Till 2006, she continued her position as Chief Minister. Then in 2011, she becomes the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu. Then 2014 she got to step down from the position because of the corruption case in Karnataka. She got sentenced in jail for 4 years with a fine amount of 100 crores. But she came out in 2015 and regains her position as CM.
M. G. Ramachandran (M.G.R) on 17 October 1972 founded AIADMK. Then after the death of M.G.R, J Jayalalitha led AIADMK. She served for 6 times as the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu. She is known as the mother of AIADMK. Congress allied with J Jayalalitha comes to power. On her second term as CM she bought a lot of popular plans like banning lottery tickets, liquor restriction, sand quarrying business take over by government and products of tobacco got banned. She also encouraged women to join the police department. In her period Veerappan got caught and killed. Not only in Tamilnadu but she managed to make alliances with a number of states like Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
At her younger age, she was very much concerned about her looks. Moreover, an arranged marriage got planned for her. But it called off at the last minute and no one knows the reason. An interesting thing is that she had liposuction to maintain her body. Believed that she never got married but had her love affair with Soban Babu a Telugu actor. She doesn’t have any child so she adopted the son of Sasikala as her son.

Jayalalitha got admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai on 22 September 2016. There she had severe dehydration and infection. So the official duties got transferred to O. Panneerselvam. Then again on December 4, 2016, she got admitted to the ICU because of the cardiac arrest. A statement got released by the press indicating that she is on life support. Followed by on December 5, 2016, she got announced the death. There are a number of rumors on her death. But a Dr. Richard Beale, the consultant from the London Bridge Hospital, told that she died from severe sepsis.
