Birth
Sujatha Rangarajan was born on 3rd May 1935 to Srinivas and Kannamma in Triplicane in Chennai.
School life
He studied in the Higher Secondary School for Boys in Srirangam. Later he did her higher studies from 1952 to 1954 in St. Joseph’s College in Trichy. He was graduated in B.Sc Physics. Then he studied the Engineering in Electronics from the Madras Institute of Technology.
Personal Life
Rangarajan (Sujatha Rangarajan) married Sujatha. He had two children Kesava Prasad and Ranga Prasad.
Initial works
In Ananda Vikatan, he wrote “Srirangathu Devathaigal” which is a collection of short stories on the incidents of Srirangam from 1940 to 1950. Next Sujatha wrote for a small magazine “Sivaji” in Trichy, when he was a student. Later in 1962, he wrote his first short story for the Kumudam magazine in 1962. He wrote the ghost based novel “Kolaiyuthir Kaalam”.
Life Career
He made his career in Tamil literature for more than forty years. Sujatha was knowledgeable in the Technology language, since he was an Engineer by profession. His contribution includes the Silicon Chip writing in Dinamani Kadhir and Yen, Yedharku, Eppadi in Junior Vikatan which made the familiarization of the Technology. He simultaneously wrote for many Tamil weeklies and journals, which includes Ananda Vikatan, Kalki, Dhinamalar Kadhir, Kumudam and Kungumam. He had been the screenplay and script writer for many Tamil films. He made his contributions for Tamil movies like Vikram, Boys, Thiruda Thiruda and Sivaji.
In 1953, his first story got published in Sivaji magazine. In 1970, he got a job in R&D at BHEL in Bangalore. For which, he stayed 14 years in Delhi. He moved to Alwarpet in Chennai, after his retirement from BHEL in 1993. His dialogues in Tamil film Roja under the direction of Maniratnam, made a strong influence in the movie world. After this, he wrote dialogues for famous Directors like Maniratnam, Shankar, Rajeev Menon and soon.
He has made above 100 novels, 15 plays, 250 short stories, 10 dramas and several numbers of different types of essays. He always made the statement that writing was his hobby and not his career. Sujatha gave the answers for science questions regularly for the magazines like Junior Vikatan. Then he did release the separate books like Yen Etharku Eppadi and Athisaya Ulagam containing FAQ in science through the Vikatan Publications.
His other writing work includes the “Katradhum, Petradhum” and Anantha Vikatan and Sujatha Bathilgal for Kumudam and Kungumam.

His short stories include Vignyaana sirukadhaigal, Nagaram, Marma Kadhaigal, Therndhedutha Sirukadhaigal, Computere Oru Kadhai Sollu, Olai Pattasu, Aatakaaran Sirukadhaigal, Karuppu Gudhirai, Thoondil Kadhaigal, Vaanathil Oru Mouna Thaaragai, Sri Rangathu Kadhaigal, Meendum thoondil Kadhaigal, Anumadhi, Pudhiya Needhi Kadhaigal, Miss Thamizh Thaaye Namaskaaram, Nijathai thedi and Maadhar Thamma.
“Kolaiyuthir Kalam” one of the popular detective novels in Tamil written by Sujatha was made into a TV serial and telecasted in Doordarsan’s Podhigai channel. Before this telecast, this came in the Tamil magazine Kumudam.
Sujatha Rangarajan as writer in films
Sujatha had written for many films like Ninaithale Inikkum, Karaiyellam Shenbagapoo, Vikram, Roja, Thiruda Thiruda, Uyire, Indian, Kannaedhirey Thondrinal, Mudhalvan, Kandukonden kandukonden, Aayutha Ezhuthu, Boys, Aayutha Ezhuthu, Udhaya, Anniyan, Sivaji, Enthiran and a few others. He was the producer for the films like Bharathi, Little John and Nila Kaalam.
Records of Sujatha Rangarajan
Sujatha had made his contribution to make and implement the Electronic Voting Machines. He was the main one behind the making up of Electronic Voting machine in India. He has written regularly for his books from 1962. Then the “Kadaisi Pakkam” in Kanaiyali magazine is very famous among his fans. He had written many themes like science, thriller, prose (articles), question and answers and poems. As a co-producer of banner Media dreams, he produced the film “Bharathi”, which is the biopic of the Tamil poet Bhaarathiyaar.
Interesting facts on Sujatha Rangarajan
Even though Sujatha spent in writing for web magazines and prints, he had been a multi-media writer. He wrote screenplays, dialogues and stories for many Tamil films, TV content and stage plays. Abdul Kalam and Sujatha were batch mates at St.Joseph’s college. He got the All India rank 2 in I.E.S exams. For the online magazine Ambalam.com, he had been the editor. He wrote the dialogues for the K.Balachander’s film Ninaithaale Inikkum. He had a hobby to paint at his free times.
Achievements of Sujatha Rangarajan
In 1993, Sujatha won the award for Science and Technology from the National Council of Government of India. Later he got the VASWIK Award for the Electronic Voting Machine. Then the Government of TamilNadu gave him the Kalaimamani Award. He had also got the Mylapore Academy Award for the Doordharshan serial “Mahan Ramanujar”. Later in 1999, he won the Best Writer Award from the TamilNadu Cinema Kalaimandram. He had also got the TamilNadu State Film Award for best movie “Pandavar Bhoomi” for the year 2001.
Death
Sujatha died on 27th February 2008 in Apollo Hospital in Chennai at the age of 72. He had been working for Shankar’s Enthiran movie before his death.
