Birth
Muthiramalinga Thevar was born on 30 October 1908 to Ukkirapandi Thevar and Indiraniammal in Pasumpon Village of Ramnad district.
Personal life
He was under the charge of his maternal grandmother Parvathiammal in the Kallupatti Village, since 1910.
School life
Earlier in 1917, he attended the classes in the elementary school run by American Missionaries in Kamuthi. he went to attend the American Missionaries run elementary school classes in the Kamuthi. Then he was admitted in the Pasumalai High School located near Thirupparankundram. Later, he moved to Christian High School located in Madurai.
Thevar’s Social activities and political life
In 1920, Muthuramalinga Thevar made his fight opposing the implementation of the Criminal Inheritance Act in Madurai, Tirunelveli and Ramanathapuram.
Thevar won for the first time in the election of Mudukulathur constituency beating the Justice Party candidate in 1936. Then he became the District board chairman since his victory.
In the following year, Thevar stood for Ramanathapuram constituency. On seeing the political growth of Thevar, the British Government made the Ramanathapuram King to contest against him. But Thevar got a huge success on winning the election.
Support to Temple Entry movement
In the year 1939, then Chief Minister C. Rajagopalachari implemented the Temple Entry Authorization and Indemnity Act that cleared the restrictions towards the Dalits stepping in the Hindu temples. He assisted the social activist A.Vaidyanatha Iyer to take lower caste people to the Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple. Thevar assured that he would give protection to the lower caste friends who enter the temple and would answer those who oppose their entry into the temple.
Thevar in Forward Bloc Party
In 1939, Thevar joined the Netaji’s Forward Bloc as he was disappointed with the Congress act of enacting the CTA. Then he took a main part in reception arrangement for the Madurai Bose visit.
Thevar’s arrest
In September 1940, from the way to Pasumpon from Madurai where he was arrested at Tiruppvanam and was jailed for 18 months in Trichy Central Prison. This arrest made agitations in TamilNadu. After 18 months of jail, he was released and jailed again under the Indian Defense Act. Finally Thevar got freedom from prison on 5th September 1945.
In 1946, Thevar was elected from the Mudukulathur constituency in the Madras presidential election without contest. Hence the criminal law was cancelled. During 1948, he was the leader of the Forward Block Party of TamilNadu, which was the main opposition party because of the discrepancy with the Congress Party.
First Lok Sabha election
During the year 1952, India’s first general election took place for both the Lok Sabha and Assembly seats. In this election, Thevar won both the seat Mudukulathur assembly seat and Aruppukottai Lok Sabha.
Changes in Forward Bloc Party
After Congress took in hand principle of Socialism during 1955, internal differences appeared in the Forward Bloc party. As a result, Hemanth Kumar Bose became the Party’s chairman and Thevar became the Deputy chairman.
Thevar’s last Lok Sabha elections
Thevar as an eminent speaker, appeared back in the Lok Sabha elections in 1962. For this election, he took part only in one campaign on a whole, with C.Rajagopalachari which was his last compaign.
Pasumpon Thevar’s Ponmoligal
Thevar’s speech was popular as he was an exceptional speaker in public meetings. Devar quotes known as ponmoligal was popular among his followers, which includes “Veeram illatha vivegam kolai thanam” and “Thesam en udal, deiveegam en uyir ”.
Death
On 30th October 1963, Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar died due to illness.
