Yelagiri   

              The Yelagiri is one of the best Hill stations, located in the Tirupattur District in TamilNadu. This place is the Vaniyambadi-Tirupattur road, is nearer to the Chennai and Bangalore cities.

History

                          The whole area of Yelagiri was the property of a Zamindhar Family in earlier days. During the early 1950s, the Government of India, took the Yelagiri from that Zamindhar. In Reddiyur, the house of that Zamindhar is still seen. In this place, the tribals are the main habitants, where there are 14 small villages. These tribals do the horticulture, agriculture and forestry for their survival.

Things to see

              The Trekking, boating on the Punganur Lake, telescopic observatory and the Vainu Bappu Solar Observatory are the things to enjoy in this place. The other important places to visit here are the Punganoor Lake Park, Jalagamparai Waterfalls, Telescope Observatory, Jalagandeeswarar Temple, Nature Park, Swamimalai Hills, Amriti Zoological Waterfalls, Government Herbal Farm, Nilavoor Lake and the Yelagiri Adventure Camp.

Climatic conditions

              The climate in the Yelagiri is very cool, during the monsoon season. During the winter, the rainfall is lesser than in summer. In this  place, the daily weather is pleasant.

Other things to see

            The highest Peak here is the Swamimalai(not the Swamimalai in Kumbakonam), which is at a distance of 4338ft from the Mangalam. This Peak is easy to climb within half an hour, with some breaks.

The Jalagamparai waterfalls is at a distance of 5Km from the Yelagiri downhill. Here the trekking, is a little tough, besides the mountain and the valley. There is no water availability in April month, so make sure that you do not trek in the April month.

On the Up Hill, you will not find the water, so carry the water with you. As it is about 4Km distance, it takes 2-3hours to climb the top of the Hill. Here you can see the green Hills during the early morning. Then try to take some eatables with you while trekking.

Best time to visit

              The best time to visit the Yelagiri is during the winter, from November to February month.

Entrance fees

There is no fee, to climb up the Yelagiri Hill.

Things to buy in Yelagiri   

              In the Yelagiri Hills, the jack fruit and the home made honey are available.  This Homemade Honey brought from the YMCA  will have the good taste and quality. Since this is a Hill region, the home made products are available here.

Tips to make Yelagiri visit

  • There are no Petrol stations in Yelagiri, so ensure that you fill vehicleTank  from the last seen petrol Tank over the plains.
  • Similarly, there are no vehicle repair shops over the Hills, except some tire changers.
  • Then try to take some eatables with you while trekking.
  • Next bring your first aid kit and your regular medicines with you.
  • There is a Government primary health center, and a private clinic.
  • The nearest health centre is in the Tirupattur.

Transport facilities                     

The buses come from Jolarpet and the Thirupattur. Otherwise you can take a taxi from these places to reach the Yelagiri. The nearest Railway station is the Jolarpettai Railway station. So reach the Jolarpettai Junction, if you come through the train. The trains are available from the Chennai, Coimbatore and the Bangalore to the Jolarpettai Junction. From the Jolarpettai station, you can choose a road transport, to reach this Yelagiri Hills. The nearest Airport to Yelagiri is the Bangalore Airport, which is at a distance of 160Km. From there, you must choose a road transport to reach the Yelagiri Hills.
