Each year on the third Thursday of November, UNESCO celebrates World Philosophy Day, underlining the enduring importance of philosophy for the growth of human thought, for each community and for each person.
Philosophy is both an inspiring discipline and a daily activity that can alter cultures. By allowing the richness of the world’s intellectual currents to be uncovered, philosophy encourages intercultural discourse. Philosophy seeks to create a more inclusive, more respectful community by awakening minds to the exercise of thought and the rational confrontation of views. Thus by establishing the conceptual conditions for change, it helps to recogznise and respond to major contemporary challenges.
UNESCO leads, but does not own, World Philosophy Day. All, wherever, who cares about philosophy belongs to it.
All UNESCO partners are encouraged to coordinate various types of activities on this day of collective exercise in an open, reasoned and educated way of thinking about the major challenges of our time – intellectual dialogues, discussions, conferences, seminars, cultural events and presentations on the general theme of the day with the participation of philosophers and scientists from all branches of the day.
