What is UPSC CSE ?

The Civil Service Exam (CSE) is conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) which is widely known as an IAS exam. This commission recruit the suitable aspirants to the top responsible Government job of india such as IAS IPS IFS IRS etc.. which we will discuss the postings below.

Eligibility

Nationality : Must be a citizen of India, a person of Indian origin or a subject of Nepal, Bhutan or Tibet settled in India before 1st January 1962.

Education Qualification : Minimam qualification of the Candidate must hold Graduate Degree from a recognised University. Candidates who are in their final year or awaiting results are also eligible to appear for UPSC preliminary Examination.

Age Limit : Minimum of 21 years of age and must not be more than 32 years of age.A candidate belonging to the General category giving the UPSC prelims should not have completed 32 years as on 1st August of that year. Candidates belonging to other categories have relaxations to the upper age limit.

Category wise age limit, relaxation and Maximum attempts :-

1. General Category & EWS: 32 years; 6 attempts.
2. OBC (with certificate): 32 years + 3 years = 35 years; 9 attempts.
3. SC/ST: 32 years + 5 years = 37 years; unlimited attempts.
4. Physically Disabled: 32 years + 10 years = 42 years; Gen/OBC/Person with Benchmark Disability(EWS category)- 9 attempts & SC/ST unlimited attempts.
5. Jammu & Kashmir Domicile: 32 years + 5 years + (3 years, if OBC OR 5 Years, if SC/ST); Number of attempts depends on the reserved category.
6. Disabled and discharged Defence service personnel: 32 years + 3 years + (3 years, if Gen/OBC OR 5 years, if SC/ST)
7. Ex-Servicemen Commission Officer: 32 years + 5 years + (3 years, if OBC OR 5 Years, if SC/ST)

Process of the examination

Stage 1 : Preliminary

• The Civil Services Preliminary exam comprises two compulsory papers of 200 marks each (General Studies Paper-I and General Studies Paper-II). The questions will be of multiple-choice, objective type. The marks in prelims will not be counted for final ranking, but just for qualification for the main exam.

• Preliminary Exam will be a 2-hour for each paper. Total 4 hours of the examination.

Stage 2 : Mains

• Candidates who have qualified in the Prelims round will only be called to attend the Mains round.
• Each paper is the duration of 3 hours
• The examination consists of Qualifying papers:
  • Consists of 300 mark each paper
    • Paper A – An Indian language selected by the candidates
    • Paper B – English
• Papers to be counted for merit consist of each 250 marks :
  • Paper 1 – Essay
  • Paper 2 – General Studies I ( Indian heritage and Culture, history and geography of the world and society)
  • Paper 3 – General Studies II ( Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations )
  • Paper 4 – General Studies III ( Technology, economic developement, bio-diversity, environment, security and disaster management )
  • Paper 5 – General Studies IV ( ethics, integrity and aptitude)
• Paper 6 and 7 are optional Subject.
  • Two papers on one subject to be selected by the candidate from the list of optional subjects below (250 marks for each paper)

Total Mark of Mains exam is 1750 Should be calculated for merit list

Stage 3 : Personality Test

Unofficially called “Interview”. The candidate who cleared the mains exam will be interviewed by a Board who will have before them a record of his/her career. He/she will be asked questions on matters of general interest.

This test consists of 275 marks

• Prelims mark is only for qualifying nature for mains exam. This mark is not considered for merit list.
• Mark of mains exam is 1725 and Interview mark is 275
• Total mark considered for merit list is (1750 + 275) = 2025.
