ORIGIN OF THE EMPIRE
Harihara I and Bukka I founded the Vijayanagara empire in 1336 on the advice of Vidyaranya, who converted them back to Hindu..
THREE MAJOR CONTENDERS OF VIJAYANAGARA
VIJAYANAGARA The young kingdom had to contend with the Hoysala rulers of Mysore and the Sultan of Madurai to establish their hold upon the region. In the war that continued for the next several years, the Vijayanagara rulers defeated the Hoysala kingdom in 1335 AD and the Sultans of Madurai in 1377 AD. The Vijayanagara empire then comprised the whole of South India up to Rameswaram, including the Tamil country as well as Kerala. The next major contender of the Vijayanagara rulers was the Bahmani empire. The reason for conflict between these two empire was the establishment of control over three major areas. These three major areas were
- The Tungabhadra Doab, which was the region between the rivers Krishna and Tungabhadra.
- The Krishna-Godavari Delta, which was very fertile and with its numerous ports controlled the foreign trade of the region.
- The Marathwada Country, for the control of Konkan and the areas which gave access to it.
