Called China’s ‘Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST)’ program or ‘Artificial Sun’, it set a new record by running at 216 million degrees Fahrenheit or 120 million degrees Celsius for 101 seconds.
For another 20 seconds, the ‘artificial sun’ reached a maximum temperature of 288 million degrees Fahrenheit (160 million degrees Celsius), which is said to be 10 times hotter than the Sun.
- The device mimics the nuclear fusion process carried out by the sun. These processes do not leave access and have the potential to provide unlimited clean energy at a low cost.
- The experiment was conducted at the Plasma Physics Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (ASIPP) in Hefei, China.
- The sun uses sun-made deuterium to form a sun-like nuclear fusion.
- The previous record of maintained plasma temperature was 180 million Fahrenheit (100 million Celsius) for 180 seconds.
