DRDO Successfully Test Indigenous Technology Cruise missile

The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has successfully tested the domestic technology cruise missile (ITCM) in Odisha from the Integrated Test Range (IDR) with the new Made-in-Turbofan engine ‘Manik’.
*The missile flew a distance of about 150 km with an Indigenous shipping engine.
*This missile was designed and developed by DRDO. This is an advanced version of the Nirbhay missile – the subsonic cruise missile.
*This is the first successful test shooting with the domestic booster machine ‘Manik’ in October 2020, after a previous failed attempt.

Featured Points:

1.The Manik machine was designed and developed by DRDO’s Gas Turbine Research Institute in Bangalore. This will replace the foreign engine used in the missile system.

*The development of the ‘Manik’ will lead to the development of different versions of the engine and long-range missiles.

2.Nirbhay is the first subsonic cruise missile designed and developed by DRDO.

*It can travel 800-1000 km at a speed of about 0.9 Mac.
*The cruise missile will be supplemented by BrahMos (a joint venture between India & Russia). This is the Indian version of the American Tomahawk missile.
