The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has successfully tested the nuclear-capable subsonic Cruise missile ‘Nirbhay’ from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha. It is the first domestic missile developed in India.

*The Aeronautical Development Establishment(ADE) under DRDO has designed and developed the Nirbhay missile in India.
*The missile has a range of 1000 km and is reported to be capable of reaching speeds of 0.6 – 0.7 mAh.
*It is capable of carrying multiple payloads and can engage multiple targets in a single flight.
*It can be started from all 3 sites like land, sea and air.

Features:

*Nirbhay is a surface-to-air missile that is extremely difficult to detect by enemy radars.
*The missile’s guidance, control and navigation system is built with locally designed ring laser gyroscope (RLG) and MEMS-based Inertial navigation (INS) and GPS (Global Positioning System).
*This missile is equivalent to the US Tomahawk missile and Pakistan’s Babur missile.
