India’s First Indigenously Developed NADS (Naval Anti Drone System)

The Indian Navy has entered into an agreement with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to develop India’s first domestically developed Naval Anti Drone System (NADS) ‘Hard Kill’ and ‘Soft Kill Skills’.

*NADS Developed by Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and produced by BEL.

Featured Points:

  1. Hard Kill refers to jamming an enemy drone, whereas soft killing has a laser-based killing system.

2. As part of the Atmanirbar load to counter enemy drone threats, various divisions of the BEL and DRDO laboratories along with the Indian Navy were involved in the production of NADS.

3. NADS Radar uses micro-drones to detect electro-optical / infrared (EO / IR) sensors, DRDO’s Radio Frequency (RF) / Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) detectors.

4. NADS was the first domestically developed anti-drone organization to join the Indian Armed Forces. Both standard and mobile versions of NADS will be provided to the Indian Navy.

5. The deal came in the wake of an incident on June 27, 2021, where small drones were used to target the Jammu Air Force base, the first attack by drones targeting an Indian military facility.

6. BEL will sign similar agreements with the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force
