Birth

Sridevi was born as Shree Amma Ayappan Yanger on 13th August 1963 to a lawyer Ayyapan Yanger and Rajeshwari Yanger in Meenampatti (Sivakasi) in Madras Presidency.

Personal life

Sridevi married the Film Producer Boney Kapoor in the year 1996, which was her second marriage. The couples had two daughters Jhanvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor.  Arjun Kapoor and Anshula Kapoor were step children to Sridevi.

Movie Career

When Sridevi was four years old, she began her acting career as a child artist. She took the role of Lord Muruga in her first movie Kandan Karunai in 1967.  She made her debut in Telugu in the movie Maa Nanna Nirdoshi as a child performer in the year 1970. By acting as Lord Muruga, she gave her first on-screen performance for the Tamil film Thunaivan in the year 1967.

In 1971, she was debut as child artist in the Malayalam cinema in the movie Poompatta.  As a child artist, she continued acting in the movies like Nam Naadu, Babu, Prarthanai, Badi Panthulu, Vasantha Maaligai, Bala Bharatam and Bhaktha Kumabara

As a heroine, her first movie in the Tamil was Moondru Mudichi in 1976. After this, she became the leading actress with the film 16 Vayithinile. Then, she gave her performance in many films like Thulavarsham, Angeekaram, Sigappu Rojakkal, Padaharalla Vayasu, Vetagadu, Varumayin Niram Sivappu, Meendum Kokila, Moondram Piram, Premabhisekham, Aakhari Poratam, Kshana Kashanam and Jagadeka Veerudu Atiloka Sundari.

Bollywood movies

The movie “Solva Sawan” in 1979 was the first Hindi movie for her, in which she took the leading role. Her movie Himmatwala in 1983, gave her a huge recognition among audiences. As a leading actress in Bollywood, Sridevi gave the successful movies like Mawaali, Naya Kadam, Tohfa, Maqsad, Masterji, Karma, Mr.India, Nazrana, Waqt Ki Awaz and Chandni. Sridevi became most familiar heroine, after she gave her performance in the films like  Naagina, Sadma and  ChaalBaaz. In Mr.India, she succeeded in playing the role of a goofy crime journalist.

She gave dual roles in the films like Lahme, Khuda Gawah, Laadla and Judaai, for which was known as queen of double roles. Then Chandni was her first Hindi film, in which she gave her original voice. From the year 1985 to 1992, Sridevi was the highest paid actress in Hindi Cinema. She gave her performance in 16 Hindi films with Jeetendra as the co-star.

In 2004, she gave her performance in the lead role for the Television serial Malini Iyer. After a break, she came back with the successful movie “English Vinglish” in 2012. She gave her appearance in the TV talk show “Satyamev Jayte” and gave her sign on a letter that recommends the Government to pass against the criminals who sexually abuse the children. In 2015, she gave her performance as the queen Yuvarani in the film Puli, which was her last Tamil movie.  Later in 2017, Sridevi acted in the role of Devki Sabarwal for her last movie “Mom”, before her death. A couple of days prior to her death in 2018, her last film Zero had completed, in which she gave her final performance. 

Achievements of Sridevi

Sridevi was the first women superstar of India.  She was chosen as a top most admired Bollywood actress in a survey conducted by the world’s largest mobile research company in 2012. In a CNN-IBN’s National poll that held in 2013, Sridevi was chosen as one among in the list of India’s Greatest Actress in 100 years. She was also one among in the 100 Bollywood Stars.  In the same year, she got  4th rank among the Bollywood’s female heroines. She was the fellow in the Film School Asian Academy of Film & Television(AAFT) in Noida.

Sridevi and Fashion

Sridevi’s face on the front page of the several magazines for many times. In 2011, her photo was on the cover of the Maire Claire.  Many magazines like L’Officiel, Vogue, Hindustan Times, India Today and Times of India featured her on the cover of their magazines. In 2015, at the Ciroc Filmfare Glamour & Style Awards she won the Ultimate Diva award.

Sridevi has won several Film fare Awards two for Tamil movies, three for Hindi movies and one for Telugu movie.  In 1971, she won the Kerala State Film Award for the film Poombatta. She won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for the film Moodram Pirai in 1981. In 1990, she became the winner of the Smita Patil Memorial Award for the contribution she gave to Indian Cinema.  In 1991, she got the Order of Afghanistan award for shooting Khuda Gawah in Afghanistan. Later in 1997, the Government of Andhra Pradesh gave her the Kalasaraswathi Award. In 2003, she won many awards. She won Lachchu Maharaj Award, Vamsee International Award and the MAAMI award in the same year.  

In 2009, she got the special honor at 33rd Cairo International Film Festival for her work in Hindi Cinema.  Later in 2013, she won the Padma Shri from the Government of India. In the same year, she won the President of India “Medallion of Honor” for her contribution to Indian Cinema. She also got the honor from the Government of Kerala in the same year. In 2014, she won the ANR National Award for the year 2013 . Again for her work in Indian Cinema, she won the Asian Award in 2018.  In the same year, she won the Titan Reginald F.Lewis Icon Award at the 71st Cannes International Film Festival. She won the Outstanding Achievement in Cinema award at the Asian Awards. In the same year, she was chosen as the Zee Cine Awards Best Actress under the Jury’s choice. In 2019, after her death, she was the winner of the ANR National Award.

Death

On 24th February 2018, Sridevi died in Jumeriah Emirates Towers in Dubai. She went to Dubai to attend her nephew’s marriage. There she died due to accidental drowning and unconsciousness in bath tub.
