The river Amaravati starts at the border of the Tamil Nadu and Kerala between the Annamalai and the Palani Hills in the Tirupur District of Tamil Nadu. This river is the tributary river of the South Indian river Kaveri.
Flowing area
This river flows for a total length of 282Km starting from its origin. Then this river flows through the Karur and Tirupur Districts of Tamil Nadu. This river Amaravati meets the river Kaveri at the Karur District in Tamil Nadu.
Tributaries of river
The main tributaries of this river are the Kudavanur, Nanganji, Shanmuga nadhi, Kudumiar, Uppar, Thenar and other tributaries in Tamil Nadu. The other tributaries are the Pambar and the Chinnar river which comes from Kerala.
Dam across the Amaravati river
The Amaravati Dam was built across the river Amaravati at Amaravathinagar in the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary in the Tirupur District in Tamil Nadu. Initially this Dam was serving as the source for irrigation and flood trapper. But after that, this Dam started generating power from the installed generating capacity.
This Dam constructed in 1957, had seen the reduction in its capacity to 3tmcft from 4cmcft because of the dirtiness, it got due to the deposit of the sediments. There is a notable amount of mugger crocodiles living in the catchment area and the large reservoir. Then the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board in 2003, gave a proposal to increase the Dam utilization after beginning the Hydro-electric Power station. This power station generates a power of 4MW capacity.
