*The ozone layer is the general term for the highest concentrations of ozone (three oxygen atoms or O3) found in the stratosphere 10 to 40 kilometers from the Earth’s surface. 90% of the ozone in the atmosphere is in the stratosphere.
*The ozone layer protects the earth from harmful UV-B radiation from the sun.
The United Nations International Ozone Layer Day is observed worldwide on September 16 each year to raise awareness of the importance of the ozone layer in protecting the earth from the harmful rays of the sun.
*The day also commemorates the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Ozone Depletion in September 1987.
*The International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer is also known as Global Ozone Day or World Ozone Day.
*September 16, 2021 marks the 27th International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer.
