Birth  

Indra Nooyi was born to Krishnamurthy and Shantha Krishnamurthy on 28th October 1955 in Madras in Tamil Nadu.

Personal Life

Indra married Raj K.Nooyi in the year 1980. His husband Raj K.Nooyi was the president at Am Soft Systems. They have two children Tara Nooyi and Preetha Nooyi. Indra Nooyi’s elder sister Chandrika Krishnamurthy Tandon is also a business woman.

Indra Nooyi Education

Indra completed her schooling in the Holy Angels Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School in Chennai (T.Nagar).  She got a Bachelor degree in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry from the Madras Christian College in 1974. Later, she got a Post Graduate Programme Diploma from the Indian Institute of Management in Calcutta in 1976.

Then she got admitted to the Yale School of Management and moved to America. There she got the Master degree in Public and private management in the year 1980.

Early Life

Initially, Indra began her career as a Product Manager in the Johnson & Johnson firm and in a Textile company Mettur Beardsell. With the Booz Allen Hamilton, she completed her summer internship at the time she was attending the Yale School Management. Later she became a strategy consultant in the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in 1980 and then became the Director of Corporate Strategy and planning and Vice President at the Motorola. After which she joined in Asea Brown Boveri.

PepsiCo Career of Indra Nooyi

In 1994, Indra entered PepsiCo in 1994 and took control over the international strategy of the company for more than ten years. She led the improvements in PepsiCo which includes the divestiture of Tricon in 1997. Indra was responsible in acquiring the Tropicana in 1998 and merging with Quaker Oat’s Company. The Taco Bell and Pizza Hut were the firms under this Tricon. Then, the profit from this move, gave an opportunity to increase the share buyback for the company, thus leading to other possessions in future without any backlash.

This brought the Gatorade product in 2001. Then, Indra’s strategy for her company like the Tropicana accession gave a tough competition to the Coca-Cola Company. By this, the annual profit of PepsiCo got an increase $6.5million from $2.7million. Later in 2006, she became the CEO in PepsiCo. The positive outcome for the PepsiCo came after the Quaker Oats Company’s possession of Gatorade, because Gatorade was making above 75% of the sports drink business during that period. 

In January 2008, Indra Nooyi became the Chairwoman of the U.S – India Business Council (USIBC). She had been leading the assembly, which of above 60 senior executives, who are the representatives of the American Industry. She made categorization of the PepsiCo products into three namely 1) better for you, 2) fun for you and 3)good for you. Her moves in PepsiCo brought her a great success and got her the sufficient funding.

In 2015, Indra considering the effects of aspartame moved Pepsi towards the healthier food by removing the aspartame from the Diet Pepsi. She introduced many of the healthy alternative products under her PepsiCo with an objective to enhance the wellness of the customers. Later in 2016, Indra Nooyi joined the business meeting by Donald Trump to give strategic and practical advice on the economic problems.

Step down of Indra Nooyi from PepsiCo

 On 3rd October 2018, Raman Laguarta became the CEO of PepsiCo replacing Indra Nooyi. Before this, PepsiCo gave the confirmation on the Indra Nooyi’s step down on 6th August 2018. Later Indra Nooyi became the Co-director of the Connecticut Economic Resource Center in 2019. Connecticut Economic Resource Center is a new firm that makes a partnership between the public and private with the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development.

She had been the Honorary Co-Chair for the World Justice Project. This World Justice Project aims to support the Rule of Law to develop communities for equity and prospect. She is the successor member of the Yale Corporation. She holds the membership in the Board of Trustees of Eisenhower Fellowships and had been the Chairperson for the U.S – India Business Council.

Awards and Honors of Indra Nooyi            

In 2007, her name was in the list of 50 women in the Wall Street Journal for the year 2007-2008. In 2007, Indra Krishnamurthy won the Padma Bhusan award. She got in the Forbes magazine’s list of the most powerful woman in the 2008. She got the rank in the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women through 2017.

In the same year, her name got the place in the America’s Best Leaders list by the U.S News & World Report.  Indra was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Fellowship in 2008.

Indra was chosen in the Institutional Investor’s Best CEOs list of the All-American Executive Team Survey for the years 2008 to 2011. By giving an untold amount as a gift to the Yale School of Management, she became the largest alumni donor and the first women to confer a deanship at a Business School.

Later, she was ranked as the first powerful women in business for 2009 and 2010. She was chosen by the Global Supply Chain Leaders Group as the 2009 CEO of the Year.

Then she was chosen as the 6th most powerful woman by the Fortune magazine for the year 2010. In 2013, she won the award from then President of India Pranab Mukherji. Then she came in the list of “25 Greatest Global Living Legends” by the NDTV. Then in 2015, she was No.2 in the list of Fortune’s Most Powerful Women. Apart from these, she got the honorary doctorates for many times from various Universities.

Income of Indra Nooyi

Indra Nooyi as a CEO, got a salary of $17million including the base salary of $1.9million and remuneration of $3million in the year 2011. She got an increase in her remuneration to $19,087,832 by 2014.
