Tranquebar  Tourist Site

The Tranquebar or the Tharangambadi is a beach town situated, in Mayiladuthurai District in TamilNadu.

History

The Tranquebar also called the Tharangambadi, dates back to the 14th century. The meaning of Tharangambadi is “site of singing waves”. This place is a combination of many cultures. This place earlier known as Tranquebar, is a town , which was established in 1620. In India, this place in the Coromandel coast, is the first Danish trading port .

Before the Danish settlement took place in Tharangambadi, the Nayaks of Thanjavur ruled this place. A deal was signed between the Nayak King and the Ove Gjedde from  Denmark (Danish). Due to that, a small part of fishing area, was given for lease to Danish traders, thus the Tharangambadi was formed with the building of Dansborg Fort. They gave this part to the British, while trading with the British for Rs. 12.5 lakhs in 1845. Today the fort is seen as the Museum in this village.

              The Masilamani Nathar Temple, Fort Dansborg, the New Jerusalem Church, Town Gate, Old Danish Cemetery, Zion Church and the Ziegenbalg Museum Complex are the important places to see in Tranquebar.

Climatic conditions

              The Tranquebar is one of the warm coastal towns in India, having a minimum temperature between 21ºC to 26ºC. Then the maximum temperature, ranges between 29ºC to 36ºC. Here the weather is pleasant from August to March month.  In summer, that is from April month to July month, the sea breeze makes bearable. From October to November month, this place experiences the heavy rainfall and cyclone.

              The  Nagapattinam is the nearest place. Then you can visit the Kayohanaswami Temple, Soundararajaperumal Temple  and the Velankanni Matha Church.

              The best time to visit the Tranquebar is from November to March month.               

Transport facilities

              The Tranquebar is located at a distance of 280Km from the Chennai city. There are private and Government buses to Tranquebar from Chennai. Otherwise, if drive your own vehicle, then you can go to Pondicherry, through the National Highway or the ECR road. From Pondicherry, you can reach the Tranquebar. The nearest stations to the Tharangambadi, are the Chidambaram and the Nagapattinam. From there, pick a road transport to reach this place. The nearest Airport is only the Chennai Airport. If you travel through the flight, then pick a road transport to Tranquebar from Chennai Airport.
