The Avalanche Eco-tourism is located in the Avalanche Village in the Nilgiris District in Tamil Nadu.  

History of Avalanche Region

A strong Avalanche had hit a part of area in the Nilgiri District of Tamil Nadu, before many hundreds of years ago. From then, this region is known as Avalanche. This region near the Ooty has become the most popular tourist location. In 1823 AD, the formation of the Avalanche Lake took place naturally, which is one of the attractive parts of the Ooty tourism now .

In Ooty, the Avalanche Lake serves as the best tourist location. This lake is at a distance of 5Km from the Emerald Lake, 33 Km from Coonoor and 23Km from Ooty. Avalanche is known as the Avalanche Sanctuary and Avalanche Lake. For the people, who enjoy the boating can visit this Lake. Then the Ooty Botanical Garden and the Rose Garden are the main tourist spots nearer to the Avalanche Lake. This Lake is open to the visitors from 8 AM to 3PM.

This beautiful natural location provides the sharpest and attractive background to the photographers for capturing photos. Then this Avalanche dam is also known as Canada Dam because of the fund, it got from the Cand. For the Kundah Hydro Power Station, this lake serves as the water source supply. This lake serves as the scenery for the nature lovers with several flowers. Apart from this, a thick forest covers this Avalanche Sanctuary that gives the best option to the visitors to have a wonderful trip.

During the month from August to October, the heavy rainfall causes a large water flow in the waterfalls, which results in the increase of the water level in this Lake. Next you can see the blossoming of the variety of flowers in this area, which provides the delightful treat to your eyes.

The tourist attractive things are Historical interest places, Hills, forest, picturesque landscape, cauliflower shoal, Lakkidi view point, Bhavani Amman temple, Upper Bhavani backwater and Serena climate.

  1. Lake visit – You can enjoy seeing the Avalanche Lake, which is amidst the forests and the beautiful waterfalls
  2. Set up Camp – If you are the nature lover to sometime in the forest, then you can set up tents with the proper permissions from the office. Otherwise, you can use the forest rent houses to stay overnights with proper permission.
  3. Fishing – This Avalanche Lake serves as the best location for fishing after the monsoons. Then you can avail the items like fishing rods from the fish Hatchery.
  4. Ride to the forest – This forest ride or safari can be made for two hours either by the jeep or bus. By this safari, you can visit the cauliflower Shola forest and the Bhavani Amman temple.

Trekking – Here the mountains near this Avalanche Lake are the best touring spots. This area is the habitat for animals like tigers, elephants, bears and others

Ways to reach Avalanche Lake Ooty

The NH67 road connects the Ooty to other cities. Therefore you can get through buses and taxis from Chennai, Coimbatore, Bangalore and Mysore.

To travel from Mettupalayam to Ooty, metro gauge steam trains are available. Then the visitors from Chennai and Coimbatore can reach Mettupalyam. From there, you can reach Ooty which is 40KM away through trains. The Airport nearer to Ooty is the Coimbatore Airport, which is 88Km away from Ooty. There are flights to Coimbatore from Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad and other cities. Those who wish to travel through flight can reach Coimbatore. From there, they can come by road or rail to Ooty .

Entrance Fees for Avalanche Eco-Tourism

In Avalanche Lake, there is no entry fee for visitors. But it is compulsory, to use the Government’s forest Vehicles. For that, the fee is Rs.150 per person. For the students, the fee is Rs.75 per head. To travel by Jeep operated by SHG, the fee is Rs.1200 per trip.
