Kudankulam power plant

The Koodankulam power plant is located in the Koodankulam in Tirunelveli District in Tamil Nadu.

History

The construction of the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Station, started on 31st March 2002. But this saw many issues due to the fishermen opposition.

Features of the Power plant

The Russian model WER-1000/V-412 known as AES-92 is the pressurized water reactor used in this Power Plant. This Plant has a gross electrical capacity of 1000MW,  the thermal capacity of 3000MW and the net capacity of 917MW.  Here the construction is made by the Atomstroyexport and the NPCIL.  Once this plant was completed, this will become the biggest nuclear power generation site in India. Then will generate a total electric power of 2GW. Both the units have the water-moderated and the water-cooled units.

Power Generation Capacity

The installation of the Koodankulam Power Plant had a capacity to generate the power of 6000MW. The Nuclear Power Corporation Ltd(NPCIL) has estimated a cost of Rs.4.29KW/hour for the energy delivered from the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant in 2015. Operation of Power Plant

On 13th July 2013, the first reactor of the Plant stuck with the criticality and then was connected to the grid, after three months. Its commercial operation had began from 31st December 2014. On 10th July 2016, the second unit attained a criticality and was connected to the grid in the August month. Then the commercial operation was initialized on 15th October 2016.

Cyber attack

In 2019, the Lazarus Group’s malware was used to gather the technical data from the KNPP. The officials said that the technology is secure from the cyber-attack through the possibility of a chance of having air-gapped. Let we see about more thermal power station

Koodankulam Lane

In November 2018,  the name Koodankulam Alley was given by the Town council of Volgonsk to the lane, which was next to the Atommash Plant. The Plant of Rosatom, generates the equipment for this Nuclear Power Plant.

Commission

A four member analyst group formed by the Tamil Nadu Government, gave a report after the inspection of the security features of the Plant. Then the TamilNadu Government in response to the power shortages, ordered the commissioning of the Power Plant.

Cost

The construction cost of Units 1 & 2 of the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant was Rs.17,270 crores. For Units 3 & 4, the construction cost was Rs.39,747 crores.

2011 Protest

A thousand of residents in the Koodankulam in 2011, gathered and protested showing their opposition to the Plant. This dismay was due to the fear of the nuclear disaster, as a response to the nuclear disaster of the Fukushima Daiichi.
