Tuticorin Thermal Power Station

The Tuticorin Thermal Power Station is situated near the new Port of Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu. This Power Station is at a walk able distance from the Bay of Bengal.  To explore other famous power station Mupppandal.

Operation of the Power plant

            Initially the coal is broken into pieces. Then the crushed coal is put into the grinding mills  through the coal bunkers using the bowl roller. Next this powdered coal is put into the pulverisers and then fed to furnace the draft fans. Here, there are four mills throughout the furnace and the oil dropping nozzles from the oil storage.

Capacity of Power Generation

The Tuticorin Thermal Power Station has 5 units for power generation. These units has a total capacity of 1050MW.  The Plant covers an total area of about 400 acres. All these Power units are depandant on coal.

Source of raw material

In this Power Plant, raw material coal is brought from the states like Bihar, Orissa, and West Bengal coal fields.  This Power Plant, obtains the  imported coal from Russia and Indonesia.

The raw water needed for the production and for the other uses in the Power station is drawn from the 20 MGD water main, set by the TWAD Board to the Tuticorin Industrial complex from the river Thamirabharani, by pumping from the Srivaikauntam Anaikut. Then the need for water is 6000 KL per day.

Why Tuticorin suitable for Power plant?

            The place where the Tuticorin Thermal Plant lies has many benefits. This place Tuticorin, is lonely and set free from the effects of the Cyclone, which helps this Power Plant to transfer the coal throughout the year. Then it is easy to draw the water from the sea for cooling  with no issue.

Achievements 

            The Tuticorin Thermal Power Station had won the award for the year 1984 – 1985. This Plant had won the Gold Medal under the Productivity Reward scheme for the years 2000-01 and the 2003-2004. This award was given for the Plant, to generate the peak hour power above  7875MU.

Cost

            The total cost of first stage of this Project, was Rs.178 Crores. The second stage costs Rs. 89 crores and the third stage costs Rs. 804 crores.

The buses are available from many parts of TamilNadu, to  Tuticorin Port Trust, where the Thermal Power Plant is located.  The distance between the Chennai and the Tuticorin Port Trust is 565Km. So you can opt a bus from  Chennai to reach this site. If you wish to travel through a train, then you can opt the Tuticorin train to reach this place.  If you travel through  flight, then you can reach the Tuticorin Airport. From there, you can choose a road transport to reach this site.
