Mettur Thermal Power Station
The Mettur Thermal Power Station is the coal based Power plant, which is situated in Mettur in Tamil Nadu. This plant is operated by the TANGEDCO(TamilNadu Generation and Distribution Limited), which is on the Thoppur to Erode road.
Capacity of the Power Generation
The first stage of this Power plant, contains the first and second units with a capacity of 210MW for a cost worth Rs.384.30 crores. Then the second stage, contains the third and fourth units with the capacity of 210MW for a cost of Rs.351.76 crores.
Source of raw material
In this Power plant, all the four units are coal dependant. This Mettur Power station receives the coal stock from the states of North India. The report from the official sources say that need above the 20,000 tonnes for each day, to operate both of the plants. This Power Plant gets the coal from the Eastern coal fields Limited of West Bengal and the Mahanadi coal fields Limited Of Orissa.

The Mettur Thermal Power Station, costs Rs.3550 crores.
Achievement
The MTPS-I is one of the IS/ISO 9001:2008 certified Organization. For the fly Ash Utilization, the MTPS-I had won the second prize from the Ministry of Power, Department of Science & Technology and the Ministry of Environment in 2005. Then this Plant had got a Commendation certificate, from the Ministry of Power in 2015, as an appreciation for the Energy Conservation. For the promotion of Safety & Environment, this Plant won the Appreciation award from the National Safety Council and the Tamilnadu Government in 2014. Then, the Mettur Thermal Power station got the first position in the TANGEDCO for making the PLF achievement for the continuous four years, that is from the 2013-14 to 2016-17. This station is the only Power plant to achieve the Annual PLF with 90% for nearly six times. In the March 2017, the new Landmark succeeded in the special Oil consumption was NIL for the power plant.

If you like to visit the Mettur Power Plant, then contact any of the HR to get the details. They may allow you in a group, with a number of students. Then ensure that you continue the visit for 10 days. Before you go to the power plant, gain some basic knowledge on the Power plants to understand its operation.
Transport facilities
You can reach this Mettur Power Plant through the buses. The buses are available frequently from few parts of Tamil Nadu in different routes. The private buses are available to Mettur from Chennai, you can use them for smooth travel. There is no nearest Railway station to reach this Power plant. So you are supposed to travel only by the available buses. If you are a distant visitor, traveling through the flight, then reach the Peelamedu Airport. From there, you can pick a road transport to reach this Mettur Thermal Power Station.
