Who is called Pranab Mukherjee?

Pranab Mukherjee is the 13th president of India from 2012 to 2017. He is a Indian Politician from the Indian National Congress.

Pranab Mukherjee as a child:

Pranab Mukherjee is also known as Pranab Kumar Mukherjee. He was born on 11 December 1935 in a place called Mirati a village in Birbhum District of West Bengal. His parents were Shri Kamada Kinkar Mukherjee and Smt. Rajlakshmi Mukherjee. Shri Kamada Kinkar Mukherjee is a freedom fighter and a member of All India Congress Committee. He is also a Legislative Council member in West Bengal.

Pranab Mukherjee education:

Pranab Mukherjee did his schooling in Dhaka school which is in Bangladesh. He got his Bachelor of Laws degree from Suri Vidyasagar College, Birbhum, West Bengal.  Next he did his post graduation from the same college. He done MA political science and History.

Personal life of Pranab Mukherjee:

On July 13, 1957, Pranab Mukherjee married Suvra Mukherjee. Surva is from Bangladesh and immigrated to west Bengal on the age of 10. They had a daughter and two sons. He lost her on august 18, 2015 of heart failure. His daughter Sharmistha is a dancer of Kathak also a politician in Indian National Congress. His first son Abhijit Mukherjee is a congress MP. He is from Jangipur, West Bengal. His younger son name is Indrajit Mukherjee. Pranab Mukherjee had hobbies like Music, Reading and Gardening. His favorite politician was Deng Xiaoping.

Pranab Mukherjee early days:

Pranab Mukherjee began his career at Deputy Accountant-General in the office of Calcutta. There he worked as an upper division clerk. On 1963, he served as a political science teacher Vidyanagar College situated in South 24 Parganas. After that he worked as a journalist in the daily called Desher Dak which is meant by Call of the Motherland.

On 1969 Midnapore by-elections, he actively campaign for Shri V.K. Krishna Menon, an independent candidate. The Prime minister then Smt. Indira Gandhi saw his potential and joined him in the Indian National Congress. On 1969, he become the member of Rajya Sabha.

Political Career:

From February 1973, Pranab Mukherjee served as a Union Deputy Minister for Industrial Development.  From 1974, he becomes the Union Deputy Minister for Shipping & Transport. On 1975 onwards he becomes the Union Minister of state for Finance. On July 1975, he was again elected as the Rajya Sabha member. From end of 1975 to 1977 he served as the Union Minister of State for Revenue and Banking. Next from 1978, he represented Rajya Sabha as the congress party deputy leader. From 1978 to 1986 and from 1997 to 2012 he remained as the member of congress working committee.

Then from 1978 to 1979, he acts as the treasurer of All India Congress and also the treasurer of Congress in the parliament. Up to 1986, he was the Board’s member of the AICC in the central parliament. From 1980 to 1982 he acts as the Union Minister of commerce, Steel & Mines. Then from 1980 to 1985 he becomes the Rajya Sabha leader. Next, joined committee on privileges in Rajya Sabha.          Followed by Business Advisory Committee Member and become Member of the Committee on Rules in the Rajya Sabha.

Pranab Mukherjee and Indian politics:

Pranab Mukherjee was elected as the Rajya Sabha member for the third time on 1981. From 1982 he was given charge of the Commerce & Supply Ministry. He administered the national elections to parliament as the chairman of Campaign Committee on 1984, 1991, 1996, 1998 and 1999. He was the President of Pradesh Congress Committee in West Bengal on 1985, 2000 and 2010.

He was the chairman of AICC Economic Advisory cell from 1987 to1989. He was the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission from 1991 to 1996. Pranab was the Union Cabinet Minister of Commerce from 1993 to 1995.  On 1993 he was elected as the member of Rajya Sabha for the fourth time. Become Union Cabinet Minister of External Affairs on 1995. He was the Chief Whip of the Indian National Congress in the Rajya Sabha from the period of 1996 to 2004.

Pranab Mukherjee as the Lok sabha member:

Pranab Mukherjee also acts as the Consultative Committee on External Affair from 1996 to 1999. He was the Standing Committee’s Chairman on Environment & Forest and on Science & Technology on 1997. On 1999, he was elected as the Rajya Sabha member for the fifth time. Later on 1999, he becomes the Chairman of AICC’s Central Election Coordination Committee. Followed by that, he becomes the General Secretary of the AICC. From 1998 to 2004, he becomes the departmentally related Parliamentary Standing Committee’s Chairman on Home Affairs.

And from 2001 to 2012 he served as the Central Election Committee’s member. He also served as the Union Cabinet Minister of Defense from 2004 to 2006. For 8 years that is from 2004 to 2012 he acted as the Leader of the House of the Lok Sabha. Then from 2006 to 2009, he becomes the Union Cabinet Minister of External Affairs. On January 24, 2009, he becomes the Union Cabinet Minister of Finance. Then on 2009, he was selected as the 15th Lok Sabha member for the second time.          

Important works:

While serving as the external affairs minister of India, Pranab Mukherjee signed the U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Agreement with the U.S. government also with the nuclear suppliers group. Although India didn’t signed Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty this agreement let India to participate in civil nuclear trade. After he was selected as the Finance Minister of India on 1980, Pranab Mukherjee was given the title as early reformer of Indian Economy. Once again he becomes the finance minister on 1980. He presented new budgets on 2009, 2010 and 2011. He gave fund for several social sector schemes like Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.     

Books of Pranab Mukherjee:

Initially on 1969, he wrote a book called Mid-Term Poll. Then on 1984 he wrote Beyond Survival – Emerging Dimensions of Indian Economy. On 1992, he wrote a book called “Challenges before the Nation”. Later in the year he wrote another book called “Saga of Struggle and Sacrifice”.

Honors of Pranab Mukherjee:

  1. On 1984, Euromoney magazine rated Pranab Mukherjee as the Best Finance Minister of the World.
  2. On 2010. World Bank awarded him the best finance minister award for Asia. This is based on the news daily in London called Emerging Markets.
  3. University of Wolverhampton on 2011 honoured him with Doctor of Letters degree.
  4. On March 2013, University of Dhaka awarded him the honory doctorate law from the President of Bangladesh, Mohammad Zillur Rahman.
  5. The University of Mauritius honored him with Doctor of Civil Law Honoris Causa on 13 March 2013.
  6. On October 15, 2015, Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel awarded him Honorary Doctorate.

Awards of Pranab Mukherjee:

  1. Best Parliamentarian Award was given to Pranab Mukherjee on 1997.
  2. He got the second highest civilian award Padma Vibushan on 2008.
  3. On 2011, K. Karunakaran Foundation awarded him the “Best Administrator in India Award”.
  4. Then he got his honorary D.Litt. award from the Visvesvaraya Technological University and the Assam University on March 2012.
  5. He received the second highest degree from Bangladesh Muktijuddho Sanmanona on March 2013. This award is called Liberation War Award.
  6. Pranab Mukherjee also got the highest civilization award Bharat Ratna from Indian Government on 2019.

On June 15, 2016, the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, Africa has awarded him the Honorary Citizenship of Abidjan
